Sugarbush Sewers Sewing to Make a Difference

Once a month, in the basement of Grace Lutheran Church of Sugarbush, a group of ladies gather. These ladies are blessed with the talent of sewing, and a passion to serve those in need. Together, they repair diapers and sew items needed at our Diaper Drops.

Some days you’ll find them focusing on doing minor repair to preloved cloth diapers, including converting velcro closures to snaps or replacing elastic. Other days they are focusing on making cloth wipes.

There are other needs they feel called to sew. These include nanny aprons, for the nannies at the Rescue Center at Real Hope for Haiti. Through close communication with the nannies, the design is tweaked from time to time to see if we can achieve a better fit or functional improvement. Pockets in just the right places, and colorful to bring a bit of cheer to the challenging work of caring for over 50 babies!

Knitting and crocheting of baby hats is also a common occurence. These baby hats are included in birthing kits, so that the babies have hats to wear to preserve body heat.

Sadly one of key need is for burial gowns. These ladies are able to provide an act of kindness to the family, providing a beautiful gown as a token of God’s love. Living in devastating poverty, these families truly appreciate this gift as a final fond rememberance. It takes a special heart to sew these, and we pray for the day when we no longer have a need for these.

The fabric and supplies needed for sewing are donated, and these ladies can always use more! One particular blessing for this group has been Thrivent Financial’s Action Team program. Action Teams have enabled the ladies to have a nice warm meal while they work, as well as provide material. We can not thank these talented ladies & Thrivent enough for what they do. The impact of sewing circles is far reaching, as we’ve sent items worldwide!
